The answer is A. In his own words, William Faulkner says "Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it. There are no longer problems of the spirit". In the rest of the speech, he hopes this fear will be overcome and our immortal nature (spirit) will be established again. This speech reflects the times he gave the speech (in 1950) but I think it is equally true even today.
