Did this guy do the right thing?

Few years back there was a incident in which a young british girl was raped and murdered by a businessman in Japan and this man offered a large sum of money to the girl's family, her mother clearly refused but the father accepted the money and withdrew the case. Well that does sound bad on his part but If you think about it, even if they had filed the case their daughter wouldn't have comeback so do you think that the father did the right thing or is he a bigger culprit than the murderer
