What's the difference between contemporary and "modernistic" literature?

I thought contemporary literature was modern literature but my literature teacher disagrees. The teacher has writers listed.. for contemporary she has "Raymond Carver, Elizabeth Tallent, John Edgar Wideman, , Lorrie Moore, Jhumpa Lahiri" and modernistic she has "Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Bernard Malamud, Flannery O’Connor, John Updike."
